Dr. Joycelyn Elders, MD was the first African American Surgeon General of the United States. Dr. Elders earned her Master’s in biochemistry and medical degree from the University of Arkansas. Dr. Elders combined her clinical practice with research in pediatric endocrinology, publishing well over a hundred papers, most dealing with problems of growth and juvenile diabetes. Dr. Elders has been a tireless voice advocating for improved healthcare for young and old alike.
