What is heart disease?

Heart disease is a very general term that refers to a number of issues that affect the heart. Most commonly, when people talk about heart disease, they are referring to any condition that involves narrowing of the blood vessels that supply oxygen to the heart. Other terms that are often used include cardiovascular disease, coronary artery disease, coronary heart disease, ischemic heart disease, or atherosclerotic heart disease. This type of heart disease accumulates over many years and is typically not due to a single event.

Coronary artery disease is caused by atherosclerosis, which is the buildup of plaque in the arteries that supply the heart. Plaques form when cholesterol and fat get deposited on the inside of the blood vessel walls. These plaques cause the arteries to get narrower, reducing blood flow to the heart. This can be a cause of chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, and other symptoms. Atherosclerotic plaques are also at risk of rupturing, which is when they break open, potentially blocking the artery and causing a blood clot to form. When this happens, the blood supply is compromised and an ischemic event occurs (a term for when the heart does not get enough oxygen). An example of an ischemic event is a heart attack.

What are other types of heart disease?

While coronary artery disease is typically what people mean when they say “heart disease,” there are many other forms of heart disease as well:

Heart failure: This refers to a number of conditions in which the heart cannot effectively pump blood forward.

Arrhythmia: This refers to a number of conditions in which the heartbeat is abnormal, such as in atrial fibrillation.

Cardiomyopathy: This refers to a number of conditions in which the walls of the heart are too thick, too rigid, or too weak.

Valvular heart disease: This refers to a number of conditions in which there is an issue with the heart valves.

Congenital heart disease: This refers to a number of conditions in which there are malformations of the heart that arise during fetal development.

Pericarditis: This refers to a situation in which the lining of the heart is inflamed.

What are the risk factors for developing heart disease?

There are many risk factors for developing heart disease. Some risk factors you can’t change, like your age, your sex, your race or ethnicity, and your family history. However, there are other risk factors for developing heart disease that you can modify or manage. The following increase your risk of developing heart disease:

  1. High blood pressure
  2. High cholesterol
  3. Diabetes
  4. Obesity
  5. Eating unhealthily
  6. Not getting enough physical activity
  7. Drinking too much alcohol
  8. Smoking

Why did Roman choose the ingredients in Roman’s Heart Health supplement?

Roman’s Heart Health supplement is a mix of seven individual ingredients, including magnesium, deodorized garlic bulb powder, vitamin K2 (MK-7), vitamin D3, CoQ10, spirulina, and fish oil. Roman chose these ingredients because each has individually been shown to have beneficial effects in some studies. These include impacting blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides, calcification of the blood vessels, and other risk factors for heart disease. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. In some cases, the evidence is limited because studies have only been done in small human clinical trials.

All seven ingredients are generally well tolerated and some are important for overall health as well. And in some cases, like with vitamin D, evidence suggests that a significant portion of the society is deficient and could benefit from supplementation. One older study also found that hospitalized patients have a high rate of magnesium deficiency. Roman’s Heart Health supplement isn’t intended to treat heart disease and isn’t a substitute for prescription treatments prescribed by your healthcare provider.

How does this supplement compare to other heart health supplements I can buy?

There are many different supplements on the market that advertise that they support heart health. While some individual ingredients may overlap between Roman’s Heart Health supplement and other brands, not all formulations are exactly the same. All seven ingredients and their dosages in Roman’s supplement were individually selected and specifically chosen. Roman’s Heart Health supplement was not tested against or compared to any other products. Roman makes no claims about how this pack will affect your body compared to other heart health supplements.
